The theoretical basis of a flexible and computationally efficient method for transient simulation of integrated AC/DC systems of any desired configuration is described. Using a modular modelling technique in conjunction with a modified state-variable approach, the state equations of the various components are formulated and solved separately at the expense of reduced computer storage and execution time. The method provides an efficient solution to the problem of simulating nonlinear characteristics and topological changes, such as caused by convertor operation, faults, or other switching actions. Computer results to test and validate the proposed simulation method are also presented.
