BP and China National Petroleum Corporation signed Iraq's first major new oil deal since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, acquiring a development contract for the enormous Rumaila oil field. The 20-year development contract for the southern oil field is the first of several deals Iraq expects to sign as it seeks to regain its status as one of the world's leading oil producers.rnBP and CNPC will be slow to invest heavily in the oil field until the outcome of January's election is certain, predict energy analysts.
