THE SQUATTER'S MAP

The National Library of Australia has a collection of more than 600 000 maps, but one of the busiest and most consulted, because it is a family historian's dream document, is Robert Dixon's 1837 Map of the Colony of New South Wales.Part of the Library's Ferguson Collection, the map is known as 'the Squatter's Map'. It is a rich source of information because—as its full title boasts—the map is Exhibiting the Situation and Extent of the Appropriated Lands, including the Counties, Towns, Villages, Reserves, Compiled from Authentic Surveys.
