Handling work-in-process is often a tough job. But at Cox NC Publication's printing facility in Greenville, N.C., stacking unbound printed materials on pallets and moving them to binding operations had become downright unacceptable. To begin, the freshly printed materials were not easy to work with. The paper coming off the press suffers from dimensional instability and warping problems, explains Rick LaBrune, narrow web manager. Also, the thin, glossy paper tends to be slick and difficult to stack. Furthermore, product damage caused by moving the printed materials on pallets was too high, LaBrune adds.
