In the late spring and early summer of 1998, fires in Florida made headlines across the country when they raged uncontrolled over a vast area, threatening people, livestock, and property, not to mention the timber, valued at millions of dollars, that was destroyed. Controlling fires has become a significant environmental issue not just in the United States but in Central and South America as well. In particular, Brazil suffered tremendous damage during the 1998 "fire season."
