Although religion and language have always had a close relationship, it is only within the last 15 or so years that applied linguists have begun to explore the linkages. The work of American evangelical Protestants in English language teaching (ELT), and their use of ELT as a 'cover' for their religious work has attracted particular attention. This book is the first to deal with what many scholars see as dilemmas surrounding the relationship between Christianity and ELT. While it does not focus exclusively on the activities of Christian missionaries, questions related to their complicity in colonialism, their impact on local languages and cultures, and the sometimes coercive nature of their evangelism are central to the debate.
