The Flipped Classroom: Engaging the Student in Active Learning

摘要

Our students have grown up in the digital age. Smart Boards have replaced blackboards and chalk. Interactive e-books loaded onto Nooks, iPads, and similar devices are gradually replacing the pile of textbooks in their backpacks. Instructors can capitalize on the students' aptitude for technology and use that to enrich the learning experience. Technology allows instructors to readily and easily bring their voice, experience, and guidance to students outside the confines of class time. Moving basic content delivery outside the class meeting time is a key component of the flipped classroom that allows students to then take responsibility for engaging and demonstrating their understanding of the material during class. This approach brings a new level of challenge that the traditional lecture cannot provide. A well-planned and executed flipped classroom is an experience that will resonate with the students and ideally inspire them to take greater responsibility for their own learning.
