Catrin Corell's book, based on her PhD thesis, examines eight films dealing with the Holocaust made between 1945 and 2003, focusing on their capacity to provoke audiences into engaging with the topic. Methodologically informed by cognitive film theory and Russian formalism, Corell argues that spectators' willingness to interact with a film text on an emotional level enhances their ability to understand the Holocaust as individually experienced suffering.
