Overall, the book has a broad coverage with substantial depth in each of the chapters. There are strengths in this book that can benefit readers in distance education, however, there are a few weaknesses as well. The strengths include the detail in the case studies of actual implementations of distance learning. The weaknesses stem from limited coverage of issues that most institutions would find important today. The narrow institutional focus on postsecondary education limits the application of the content to other educational settings. The literature reviews of distance learning are major strengths of this book. The editors have organized an excellent collection of works of scholars that range from a chapter emphasizing distance education parallels to the telecommuting literature to library services for distance education courses and programs. The ideas in all chapters are supported by the literature in distance education as well as several disciplines that have achieved significant success in online delivery especially in the fields of business and computer information systems.
