The philosopher Alfred North White-head, writing in 1911, championed a cause that he knew would strike many people as weird. He urged everyone to cultivate the habit of acting without thinking. "Civilization advances by extending the number of operations which we can perform without thinking about them," Whitehead contended. "Operations of thought are like cavalry charges in a battle—they are strictly limited in number, they require fresh horses, and must only be made at decisive moments."
