A Transitional Environment

Attitudes to HD in Europe have changed radically over the past cou-pie of years. Where not so long ago there was the view that without HD delivery to television audiences in the home market, HD was irrelevant in Europe, now there is an increasing rate of adoption in core European markets. What has brought about this change, while there is still no HD implementation in sight for the European broadcast region? Of course, in our global village it's true that what happens at one end of the street is bound to have an effect on the other end. Manufacturers and content suppliers develop their wares for a global market and co production is an increasing fact of life. If Japan, Australia, Korea and the US markets are all showing HD programming, content providers in Europe have to create programming in formats that buyers want. They also have to deliver the same programming in the formats used by their other markets, and so it's a logical move in this context to consider HD production for its mastering potential. In other words, shoot and produce in HD and you have access to the HD networks, a future-proof asset for HD delivery in Europe when the time comes, and a high-quality master from which to make versions for the current SD markets.
