Issues in International Trade: Looking to the Codex Alimentarius Commission

The upcoming biennial meeting this month in Rome of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) promises to be another extremely important forum for deliberation of several issues affecting international trade in food. The CAC is the international food standards setting organization referenced by the Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures and Technical Barriers to Trade Agreements of the Uruguay Round of GATT. Codex texts (standards, guidelines, and recommendations) are considered an international benchmark by the World Trade Organization.
