The Food Quality and Safety Programme was announced in December 1998 and launched officially in May 1999. It responds to the priorities identified by the Foresight Food Panel and concentrates on the need to meet increasing consumer demand for food and drink of consistently high quality in terms of safety and eating properties. There are, at the time of writing (early October), 8-9 projects in the pipeline and others are being assessed. Activity is increasing and, by the end of the year, it is anticipated that the programme will be supporting some 20 or so projects. This article summaries the programme's four priority topics - raw materials quality; food ingredients, food safety and materials science; quality and safety measurement; strategies for enhancing food quality and safety - how the programme is funded and managed and how to apply for funding.
