The decision by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to issue a non-mandatory advisory regarding bisphenol A (BPA) has added yet another voice to the fray surrounding the safety of a chemical that has become a household name.rnThe state agency on 3 August warned parents of children up to two years of age to avoid using BPA-containing products to make or store infant formula and breast milk. It also advised pregnant and nursing women to avoid products that may contain the chemical.

The collaborations analysed span academia, civil society and government, from the grassroots to the national and global levels. By locating these examples within the broader debates on interactions between researchers and research users designed to strengthen evidence informed decision making, this publication offers concepts and practices to inform those funding, designing and undertaking development research. The featured case studies are explored through the perspectives of both researchers and their partners in civil society and policy.
