Coal-Fired Power Plant Agrees to Limit Emissions of Nitrogen Oxides, Mercury

TransAlta Centralia Generation LLC, operator of Washington state's only coal-burning power plant, has agreed to emissions limits on nitrogen oxides and mercury, under a proposed settlement agreement with the Department of Ecology, the agency said Sept. 8.rnThe proposed agreement, subject first to a public comment period and then to the Environmental Protec-rntion Agency for approval, provides for the plant to meet EPA's best available retrofit technology (BART) requirements and help reduce emissions that create haze and limit visibility in national parks and wilderness areas, the department said in a statement.rnThe mediated settlement agreement provides for the plant to reduce nitrogen oxides emissions by 20 percent below the plant's current permit by Oct. 1, the department said.
