Local Governments Should Take Lead On Climate Change, White House Says

Local governments should take the lead in climate change adaptation because climate impacts are felt most intensely at that level, a White House official said Dec. 4. Susan Roffo, the White House Council on Environmental Quality's deputy associate director for climate change adaptation, said the federal government's role in combating climate change should be largely supporting those city and state efforts and conducting risk mitigation efforts. Mayors from Salt Lake City; Boulder, Colo.; and Pinecrest, Fla., agreed different localities would require significantly different actions to make cities resilient but said that would require improved communication at all levels of government and with constituents.
