Chemical Safety Board Plans to Send Team to Illinois Plant Fire

The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board said it will send investigators in the coming days to the site of a massive explosion and fire Monday at a Chemtool Inc. factory inRockton, Ill.“The CSB will continue to monitor the incident and tentatively plans to deploy a team to the area early next week to expand dialogue with Federal and State partners, to include EPApersonnel, regional OSHA personnel and Fire/Emergency Management personnel,” the agency said in a statement issued late Tuesday afternoon.It said assessments so far indicate the “incident is a fire event and not a chemical process safety event” and that the plan was to allow volatile materials to burn off to avoid firefightingfoam runoff into a local waterway. The factory’s 70 workers were all evacuated without injury.
