GSM Association and 17 leading mobile operators and manufacturers announced at the Mobile World Congress at Barcelona . that they are committed to implement a cross-industry standard for a universal charger for new mobile phones.rnThe objective is to ensure that the mobile industry adopts a common format for mobile phone charger connections and energy-efficient chargers. This is expected to result in an estimated 50 per cent reduction in standby energy consumption, the potential elimination of up to 51,000 tonnes of duplicate chargers, and a simpler customer experience. This estimate is based on the assumption that 50-80 per cent of the estimated 1.2 billion handsets sold in 2008 were replacements.
