Anthony nuttall, an Oxford professor who died in January, was a Shakespearean grandee, and only the grandest of grandees is given the freedom to follow their thought wherever it wants to go. His central thesis-that an exceptional cognitive intelligence is at work in Shakespeare's plays-is simple but not generally accepted. Will his book convince readers that Shakespeare was indeed as intelligent as a Newton or a Galileo? Writers are acknowledged to be masters of imaginative and emotional effects but tend not to be regarded as great thinkers.
