Generating Reliability: MATEP's new power model

The Longwood Medical and Academic Area (LMA) of Boston is home to six hospitals, numerous biomed-ical and pharmaceutical research centers and multiple Harvard Medical School-affiliated teaching institutions. For the past 25 years, the LMA has been supplied with steam, chilled water and electricity by the Medical Area Total Energy' Plant (MATEP LLC), which now serves more than 9 million sq ft of space. Given the critical missions of its medical industry customers, MATEP is dedicated to delivering highly reliable service. As it does so, the company has been evaluating and implementing some new business strategies, including supplying electricity to the New England grid.
