Historically, in the teaching of basic control engineering courses, the design of feedback compensation has relied, to a great extent, on trial-and-error procedures. This situation has not changed in basic control systems courses (see "Summary"). Through these trialand-error design methodologies, students perceive the tradeoffs involved in the design of a control system in a very direct way.
