JAPANESE PRODUCTION AND IMPORT-EXPORT TRADE OF CANNED FOODS IN 2020

Japanese annual production of canned and bottled foods decreased and amounted to 2,312,868 metric tons in 2020, which was 89.8% of the previous year production. Among these products, canned provisions have decreased by 3.5% from 205,327 tons in 2019 to 198,041 tons in 2020. In the sectoral aspects, Fruits increased as compared to the previous year. In the item-by-item aspects, tunas, skipjacks, mikans, mixed fruits, sweet corns, and yakitoris increased as compared to the previous year. The import volume of canned foods was 671,656 tons in 2020 that was down 0.3% as compared to 673,952 tons in 2019. The import unit value has decreased. Consequently apparent quantity supplied of canned and bottled foods in 2020 was 0.94 million tons in comparison with 0.95 million tons in 2019.
