Innovative Approaches to Civil Engineering Education in Infrastructure

Infrastructure in Canada and other countries consists of public works and physical facilities, and it represents a significant portion of its "national assets and wealth". Infrastructure facilities became necessary after the industrial revolution, to improve the public health conditions through development of sewers and water supply systems. Subsequently, these were followed by transportation systems, electric power and telephone networks. These facilities were not planned in a coordinated manner until well into the 20th century and were expected to last for 50-75 years with no systematic repair or replacement methods in place. Presently, these constructed physical facilities provide for the various activities of the society, including transfer (distribution) of resources and services through transportation of people and goods and exchange of information.
