Gail T. Fairhurst's purpose in Discursive Leadership: In Conversation With Leadership Psychology is to facilitate a dialogue between the discursive and psychological schools of leadership research. Leadership psychology is grounded in an empiricist tradition, and it focuses on how to behave like a leader and how to function effectively in different situations. The discourse school focuses on communication of cultural meaning (discourse with a small "d") and systems (Discourse with a capital "D"). According to Fairhurst, discourse involves the study of talk and text to discern social practices. In Discourse, social practices are discovered through communication patterns at a particular time in history. These patterns reflect power relationships within society.
