The Bauhaus charted a new course for design in the early 20th century. Are there parallels to the design challenges we face today?

When the Bauhaus school was formed immediately after World War I, Germany's industry was in shambles, the machine was profoundly transforming the world, and integrated design was all the rage. In many ways, our world today appears remarkably similar: Economic woes persist across the globe; a more sophisticated instrument, the computer, is changing the way we live; and integrated design-defined as holistic design developed through collaboration and knowledge integration-is still a leading methodology (although today's version has a broader application, as we'll see). A brief outline of the Bauhaus and its historical context is instructive.
