In May 1968 I began designing the Australian Pavilion for the International Exposition in Osaka 1970 (drawing pictured on page 16). One of the most important aspects of the Japanese attitude to life was the mental discipline, the importance of the spiritual over the physical, and the importance of meditation. Therefore, in my design I placed great importance on creating the illusion of a floating roof; a roof that appeared to have broken free of the physical forces of gravity.
