50 A220s for Green Africa

NIGERIAN START-UP Green Africa Airways has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Airbus for 50 A220-300s. The commitment makes this the largest deal for the type within the continent, with deliveries from the contract due to start next year. Christian Scherer, the chief commercial officer of Airbus, said: "The unique characteristics of the A220 will allow the airline to unlock destinations and route pairs that previously would have been considered non-viable." In addition to the large order, Green Africa Airways will lease a further three of the type from GTLK Europe. The new airline - to be based at Lagos/Murtala Muhammed - plans to use these initial jets to launch scheduled operations in August of this year.
