Fabric-Based Integrated Energy Devices for Wearable Activity Monitors

Wearable electronics have attracted great attention along with the development of flexible and stretchable electronics as well as the rapid propagation of mobile devices. Those devices are of a particular interest for the collection of physiological and electrophysiological information from the human body, with application examples including: epidermal electronics based on inorganic semiconductors, organic electronic devices laminated on the skin, highly sensitive pressure and strain sensors that can emulate human skin, active-matrix mechanical sensor arrays for electronic skins, and multifunctional electronic patches for the diagnosis and therapy of movement disorders. However, most of the flexible electronics developed thus far have relied on the connection to external power sources through long wires, which often limits their mobile applications. Consequently, there is a pressing need to develop integrated power generation and storage devices that are readily incorporated into either implantable or wearable devices.
