Nathaniel Hawthorne is considered as one of the greatest American novelists in 19th century and his reputation has been on the increase with the publication of The Scarlet Letter. This paper concentrates on the origin of Hawthorne’s ecofeminist consciousness from three aspects for the hope that readers can get a fuller understanding of his complex attitude towards nature and women.
