As a central figure of Romanticism in American literature and one of the greatest American poets, Edgar Allan Poe is famous for his masterpiece The Raven, which talks about a mysterious visit of a talking raven to a distressed lover, tracing the lover's slow fall into madness. This poem is noted for its musical rhythm, dolorous atmosphere, special devices and unique imagery. Defamiliarization is the main principle of Russian formalism. Literature defamiliarizes things that have become habitual or automatic and then produces the effect of freshness in the reader's experience of it.
