No.5 Garden Street is written on the background of China’s urban economic reform in early 1980s, in which Liu Zhao is described as a reformer who is bold in innovation and Han Liu as a high official who is prudent and experienced. They have a hand-wrestling contest three times, which is seemingly their strength competition but is actually an implication of Han Chao’s sympathy for Liu Zhao. The description of three-time hand wrestling shows the difference of their circumstance and identity as well as the symbolic meaning implied in their strength contest.
