It is commonly believed that Yan Yu's Cang Lang Shi Hua is a representative work of poetic criticism in the Song Dynasty. This work, however, can also be regarded as a textbook of poetic education. Written for poetry learner, this work more elaborate on poetic techniques, possibly as manual for poetry learners, than on its major viewpoints in the chapter "Distinctions of Poetry". That Cang Lang Shi Hua was first accepted and became popular in the field of popular poetics (like Yang Zai's Shi Fa Jia Shu) in the Song and Yuan Dynasties revealed that Yan Yu took poetry learners into consideration in his writing.
