The essay The Traffic in Women: Notes on the Political Economy of Sex by Gayle Rubin is very famous as a kind of theory of feminism. However, its theory building was not a sound result of integration of different theory resources. In researchful temperament Gayle Rubin is quite a radical formalist and postmodernist. Although her research method adopted in the essay should be classified as structuralism, ultimately she achieved her aim of of deconstruction. Clearly, her thought course is opposite to that of Marxism. To a great degree, she had manipulated the thought heritages of predecessors and had used them out of the right contexts. Because she tended to exaggerate “the sex/gender system” as the very core of the whole society, she regarded it as the ultimatre cause of women’s oppression. Therefore, she planned to eradicate women’s oppression only aiming at “the sex/gender system” and regardless of the whole social material basis.
