1895年 ,由传教士李提摩太翻译的《泰西新史揽要》(汉文版)在上海出版后 ,风行一时 ,不仅众多学堂用以作为世界历史教材 ,而且引起大批士人、官僚的阅读兴趣 ,甚至光绪皇帝也将其置于御案之上 ,不时披览.该书畅销和流行原因很多 ,而最关键的是 ,其史观和内容 ,在很大程度上适应了晚清"趋新"国人了解西方现当代历史的迫切需要.%In the year of 1895,the History of the Nineteenth Century(Chinese Version) translated by the missionary Timothy Richard was published in Shanghai and enjoyed much popularity .It was not only used as a textbook for world history,but also triggered the interest of many scholars and officials' interests in reading .Even Guangxu emperor read this book .There are many reasons to explain why this book became so popular at that time,one of which is that the content of that book and the historical viewpoints expressed in that book,to a great extent,meet the demands of the neoteric Chinese who want to know more about the western modern and contemporary history in the late Qing Dynasty .
