Each year the supply of special education teachers in the United States falls short of the demand required. There are a number of reasons for this shortage including attrition. Attrition refers to teachers who exit the teaching profession or who transfer positions within the education setting. Teachers who transfer positions include individuals who transfer from special to general education settings.; This study collected information regarding special education teachers who transfer to general education in the state of Utah. Findings indicated that the respondents want to teach. They enjoy teaching, and are satisfied with the teaching aspects of education. However, they are frustrated and unhappy with the noninstructional aspects of special education, particularly paperwork, support from school administrators, and feelings of isolation. If the time and physical demands of the noninstructional aspects were reduced or eliminated, perhaps special education attrition may be reduced and quality special education teachers could be retained.
