This paper presents an approach for modeling the valve train system to obtain a homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine from a gasoline engine. The HCCI engines use different indirect strategies to control the start of the combustion. The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is one of the most used methods. To obtain the internal EGR the valve train has to be modified to trap a part of the burned gases at the end of the exhaust stroke. The paper presents the results obtained simulating the processes from inside the engines using different valve timings to obtain different EGR rates.
