Objective: We sought to explore the effect of black garlic extract on lung cancer cell line Lewis and preliminary discuss the possible molecular mechanism. Methods: Inhibition rate of lung cancer was detected by MTT. Changes of cell morphology were observed by Hoechst staining. Flow cytometry is used to detect changes in the cell cycle. The activity of caspase-3 and caspase-9 was assayed by colorimetry with commercial kit. Results: Black garlic extract could had significantly inhibitory action on growth of Lewis lung cancer cell. Black garlic extract could significantly induced Lewis cell apoptosis and affected cell cycle. The activities of caspase-3 and caspase-9 were significantly increased by black garlic extract. Conclusions: Black garlic extract suppresses the growth of lung cancer Lewis cells. Black garlic extract induces apoptosis of Lewis cells, which may be associated with enhanced caspase-3 and caspase-9 activity.
