Nowadays, underground excavation may be a key factor in the cost and critical path of mining projects. Thus, the optimization of the excavation method may have a significant impact on the value of these projects. Nevertheless, in many countries the development of the tunnelling technique has been left far behind when compared to the developments in other areas of the mining process.
