Challenges in the design of multi-functional video based driver assistance systems

The first generation of video based driver assistance systems realized individual functions such as night vision, high-beam control and lane departure warning, to name but a few. In the face of the rapidly growing demand for driver assistance functions, current systems have to provide the driver with a multitude of functions. Intelligent headlamp control, lane-keeping support, traffic sign recognition and object detection spring to mind. The first part of this contribution is an overview of the current developments at Bosch in the field of combining multiple functions in an optimized way. To this aim, we will sketch the function portfolio and discuss how we deal with the challenges which arise in the domain of systems engineering as a result of the combination of several functions. The main methodological focus is then going to lie on a simulation technique which facilitates the optimization of hardware design. In the second part we show how multi-functionality is realized on the basis of a flexible and modular Multi Purpose Camera (MPC). Using the example of intelligent headlamp control we sketch how the presented systems design methods have been applied in the development process and how the hardware architecture of the MPC enables a high degree of multifunctionality.
