Research and Education for Next Generation Manufacturing - An Australian Perspective

The Australian manufacturing sector, like that in many other countries, is facing very considerable challenges from the emergence of China as a major manufacturing power in many consumer products industries but also in industrial goods and components of all kinds. Australian manufactures are not competitive in producing standardized products which require relatively high inputs of labour, especially unskilled labour. In order to be competitive Australian manufacturing companies, like those in other developed countries, need to be able to change their businesses so that they can deliver higher value for customers. They must be able to better customise their product offerings and to use technological innovation and design to achieve this.
