This paper is a continuation of a previous study by M.J.Lorang and R.J.Clark of Luzenac.Their study entitled,Reinforcing Pigments for Molded in Color TPOs,was presented at the SPE TPO Conference in 2001.Talc has successfully been used for a number of years as a reinforcing filler in Thermoplastic Polyolefins(TPOs).Traditionally,talc used as a filler in the paper industry has been color graded by dry powder brightness and yellowness value(b).Recently,the increasing use of TPOs for unpainted,molded-in-color automotive components and many other plastic applications requires that talc meet more demanding color requirements than just dry powder brightness.Talc can affect molded-in-color by ore type,particle size,and content.This paper addresses color of talc in general and color measurement techniques that we have developed to correlate a processed color of the talc to the molded color of TPO parts.
