Optical Properties of Organic Wide Band-Gap Semiconductors under High Pressure

Optical studies under hydrostatic pressure are presented using photoluminescence, Raman scattering and photo-induced absorption from two families of conjugated molecules, a polycrystalline "soft" oligomer and an amorphous "rigid" material. These studies provide insight into the geometry of the molecules, namely, planarization of the molecules under high pressure in the "soft" oligomer. Electronic spectroscopy under pressure elucidates the nature of the ground and excited electronic states of these materials.
