Since their inception, education institutions have constituted one of the socialisation agents thatreproduce the structure of the social system in which they are immersed. The observation andanalysis of the model of relationships, which make up life in education centres, enable us to verify theexistence of relationship networks within the same that reproduce the stereotypes currently in force insociety and also the unevenly-matched distribution of roles between women and men.From the perspective of gender, through the study of the hierarchical and power relationships, that areestablished among the members of the education community, the analysis of schools will account forthe presence of sexist stereotypes in the organisation and in the different structures of educationcentres. The relationships under consideration fall into two categories: first of all, those which areestablished horizontally, that is to say, those which exist among groups of professionals of the samerank, and secondly, those which are established vertically, namely those which come about in thepyramidal management and administration structure of education centres.To get an insight into this situation and to be able to analyse it, from a gender point of view, we willpresent the results of the evolution observed over the last five years in the professional staff that makeup the education community (teaching staff of the various stages in the non-university educationsystem, management and specialised personnel, administrative employees, junior and support staff)in general education centres in the autonomous region of Galicia.
