Mexican Education has undergone a major overhaul in the last nine years. This reform processincludes: a professional teaching civil service instituted at the federal level in 2013;;the inclusion, in2012, of Upper Secondary Education (USE)as part of compulsory education;;a new revised nationalcurriculum - K to 9th grade - approved in 2011;;and the introduction in 2008 of a National CommonCurriculum Framework for USE, with an approach based on competences. The keystone of thisprocess is the new role assigned, in 2013, to the National Institute for the Evaluation of Education(INEE)in the monitoring and the assessment of the national education system. The INEE was grantedautonomy and extensive attributes in that respect. Some of these attributes include issuing mandatoryrecommendations to the Federal Ministry of Education (SEP). Recommendations have to be validatedby data and research. Part of the research sought by INEE in regard to the design compulsoryeducation curriculum was formally required to the Education and University Research Institute of theNational Autonomous University of Mexico in April 2015. Some of the major perspectives obtainedfrom such a study are presented here.
