Porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED), which recently emerged in the United States, is characterized by acute diarrhea and dehydration in both suckling and finishing pigs.1,2 The disease is caused by a coronavirus, porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV). Losses due to PED can be severe, and there is a need for efficacious vaccines.Alphavirus-derived replicon particles (RP) are propagation defective, single-cycle expression vectors that have been established as a safe and effective vaccine platform for swine.3 The RP platform has previously been used to develop effective vaccines for other coronaviruses, notably SARS-CoV. In response to the urgent need for effective vaccines, Har-risvaccines is developing RP-based PED vaccines.
