This paper presents our recent progress with the development of silicon (Si) photonic devices utilizing silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers. Si photonics has emerged as an attractive technology for developing innovative and inexpensive optoelectronic devices. Si photonics enables us to make optical components small due to the high index contrast of Si and SiO_2. Therefore, ultrasmall electrical and optical components can be fabricated and integrated on SOI wafers. Si photonic devices will have various applications in telecommunications, optical interconnections, and quantum information systems.
