Cardiac valve replacement in patients on chronic hemodialysis

Patients on chronic hemodialysis have a lot of problems such as advanced atherosclerosis with severe calcification and frequent chance of infection during hemodialysis. This study was focuses on the short and long term outcomes of hemodialysis patients. This study was carried out as a retrospective analysis in the Cardiovascular Surgery, Kinki University Hospital. Thirty-seven patients (Female 11 and Male 26) underwent valve replacement between 1 June 1996 and 30 September 2008. Average age at operation was 63.8 years and the mean duration hemodialysis was 100.1 months. The overall 30-days mortality was 18.9% (7/37). NYHA functional class of the patients who recovered from the operation was improved from preoperative status. The results of valve replacement for patients on chronic hemodialysis were not satisfied. However, postoperative course of the patients who could recover from the operation was good.
