Piglets are bom without immunoglobulin, due to the epithelio-haemomonochorial type of swine placenta. All the specific immunoglobulins found in blood of newborn piglets come from mother's colostrum. The persisting milk immunoglobulins protect the intestinal milieu of the piglet by means of lactogenic immunity. Piglets fed milk supplemented with Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC) showed an increased postweaning growth and reduced TNF-a expression in the intestinal and liver tissues, suggesting an importantimmunomodulatory role of the combined treatment (1). The influence of SC B-glucan supplementation on the immune function in pigs was also studied. It was found that B-glucan can selectively influence performance and exert some beneficial effects on thesomatotropic axis and immune functions in weaned piglets challenged with E.coli lipopolysaccharides.
