Application of Two Elevators in the Same Hoistway

An elevator system first developed in the 1930's in which two cars operate separately and independently in the same hoistway can provide the increased handling capacity of a second lift without taking additional core area. Such systems are now providing passenger service in two buildings in Germany, and more installations are planned. This paper will present the basic control concepts of the so-called TWINTM system and will present several examples of actual projects for which TWIN has been proposed. For buildings where TWIN is the appropriate solution, a substantial savings in core area can be realized when compared to traditional elevatoring configurations.
