Dose effect of ursodeoxycholic acid used in the treatment of primary biliary cirrhosis and primary sclerosing cholangitis

Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is approved for therapy in the treatment of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States and is also recommended for treatment of patients with PBC by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. Although UDCA is not of proven benefit in patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), a large number of patients with this disease currently receive UDCA on an empiric basis. Information regarding the role of the formulation of UDCA used, the timing of administration of the doses, and the total cumulative daily dose, although in some instances quite limited, is reviewed.
